Bishkek Art Center

(2006-2011)

The Bishkek Art Center, founded by Shaarbek Amankul, the Artistic Director, was a pioneering cultural artistic project that operated from 2006 to 2011. As the visionary behind the center, Amankul conceived and led the initiative with the goal of promoting contemporary art in Kyrgyzstan. His leadership was instrumental in shaping the center’s mission to merge Kyrgyzstan's rich cultural heritage with modern artistic practices, fostering a dynamic dialogue between tradition and innovation. Amankul was the key figure behind its establishment, with Б'Art Contemporary providing the organizational support for the center’s activities. During its five years of operation, the Bishkek Art Center hosted over 50 local and international exhibitions, art exchanges, residencies, seminars, masterclasses, workshops, public art installations, theatrical performances, concerts, and various other cultural events at the Union of Artists' Big Exhibition Hall. In doing so, the project played a pivotal role in shaping Kyrgyzstan's artistic landscape, offering a vital platform for both local and international artists and creative exchange, promoting contemporary art while preserving and integrating traditional cultural values. The project encouraged creativity, education, and cultural dialogue while fostering innovation and collaboration within the country. Housed in a historically significant Soviet-era art factory, the center spanned seven interconnected sections, including approximately 60 artist studios, exhibition halls, and spaces for workshops and performances. This diverse environment nurtured creativity and supported artists at all stages of their careers. The project also led the way in public art projects and competitions, becoming a key catalyst for creative expression in Kyrgyzstan and encouraging collaboration between Kyrgyz and international artists. Many Kyrgyz artists participated in residencies and exhibitions in countries such as the USA, Germany, Switzerland, France, and Japan.

The Bishkek Art Center’s commitment to innovation and cultural exchange significantly influenced the development of contemporary art in the country, solidifying its legacy as a leader in supporting artistic growth and cross-disciplinary collaboration, particularly in the context of Kyrgyzstan’s post-independence period. The project also promoted experimental artistic methods and contributed to the broader regional art scene. Among its social initiatives were art therapy programs designed to provide spiritual and psychological support to children from orphanages, involving psychologists, artists, and educators in a holistic, community-driven approach. Through these efforts, the center focused on addressing important social issues through contemporary art while enriching the cultural fabric of Kyrgyzstan.
